Lectura y bibliotecas de mujeres en la España del siglo XVIII. Una aproximación

Abstract

Este estudio pretende hacer una aproximación al mundo de la lectura y de las bibliotecas femeninas en la España del siglo XVIII. Toma como base una serie de trabajos existentes sobre el tema y se estructura en dos partes. En la primera se hace un breve acercamiento al fenómeno de la alfabetización femenina, como punto de partida para conocer qué mujeres estaban en condiciones de poder leer, y a la posesión de libros por parte de las mujeres, detectada en los estudios seriales de los protocolos notariales. En la segunda se hace la revisión de un conjunto de bibliotecas femeninas hasta ahora estudiadas. Junto a las grandes bibliotecas de dos reinas de la época, se da noticia de otras pertenecientes a nobles tituladas y a mujeres de la élite social cortesana. El análisis de sus contenidos permite explorar las lecturas más usuales y preferidas de una muestra significativa de mujeres durante esta centuria.

The aim of this study is to make an approach to the world of reading and female libraries in Spain in the 18th century. Based on a series of existing works on this topic, it is structured in two parts. In the first one, an approach to the phenomenon of female literacy, as a starting point to know which women were in the position of being able to read, as well as which of them were able to possess books, detected in the serial studies of the notarial protocols. The second one is a review of singular feminine libraries from the ones studied so far. In addition to the two large libraries of queens from the 18th century, we study other libraries belonging to nobles and women of the social courtesan elite. The analysis of its contents allows to explore the most usual and preferred readings of a significant sample of women during this century.
