AB In this paper, we will be concerned with the semantic and pragmatic aspects of two types of expressions which are standardly treated in the literature as belonging to the same category: interjection and onomatopoeia. We will try to show that, being semantically different and making a different contribution to the process of utterance interpretation, they must be treated separately. Our proposal draws heavily on two relevance-theoretic distinctions: the conceptual/procedural distinction, and the distinction between the proposition expressed and the higher-level explicatures of an utterance.
