The study of the hydrodynamic patterns has been done with the computation of particle trajectories and residence time maps, using the High Frequency Radar (HFR) current measurements provided hourly by the Gibraltar network. The inclusion of the recently installed Camarinal Station in the gap-filling methodology (Open-boundary modal analysis, OMA) previously applied, needed for the Lagrangian approach, makes it the first work to completely cover the SoG with a gap-free 2D HFR current field. The resulting OMA nowcast has reconstructed the surface current field, being them highly correlated -(Ru=0.93; Rv=0.88)- with the patterns provided by the totals, and it has also shown to have a high potential for Lagrangian diagnoses, as a first approximation. It has offered the possibility to visualize (sub)mesoscale structures already described in previous studies (e.g cyclonic gyres at the coastal margin; suction of particles to the central channel) and others not so well known (e.g coastal countercurrent; transversal transport from South to North). Moreover, the transport properties have been related to the joint effect of tidal and wind forcing (e.g westerlies and spring tides contribute to the positive vorticities at the coastal margin East of Trafalgar and between Paloma Point and Tarifa; easterlies and neap tides increase the residence time on the western side). All together, these processes contribute to increase the retention of enriched waters at the western side of the SoG explaining the high chlorophyll concentrations detected in other studies.}, abstract = {El presente trabajo analiza la influencia conjunta de las fuerzas de marea y viento sobre los procesos de transporte superficial responsables de la alta retención encontrada en el lado occidental del Estrecho de Gibraltar, especialmente aquellos responsables de las altas tasas de residencia en el margen costero. El estudio de estos patrones hidrodinámicos se ha realizado mediante la computación de trayectorias virtuales y la obtención de mapas de tiempo de residencia, usando los datos horarios proporcionados por el sistema de Radares de Alta Frecuencia del Estrecho. La inclusión de la antena de Camarinal en la metodología de rellenado de huecos (Open-boundary Modal Analysis, OMA) previamente aplicada, necesaria para la aproximación Lagrangiana, convierte este trabajo en el primero en cubrir el Estrecho de Gibraltar con un campo de corriente 2D completo. El campo de corriente OMA tiene una alta correlación con el de totales -(Ru=0.93; Rv=0.88)- y ha mostrado tener un alto potencial para aplicaciones Lagrangianas, como primera aproximación. Ha ofrecido la posibilidad de visualizar estructuras (sub)mesoescalares ya descritas en estudios previos (p.ej. vórtices ciclónicos en el margen costero; succión de partículas al canal central) y otras menos estudiadas (p.ej. la contracorriente costera o el transporte transversal de Sur a Norte). Asimismo, estos procesos han sido relacionados con el efecto conjunto del viento y la marea (p.ej.con poniente y mareas vivas se intensifican las vorticidades positivas al Este de Trafalgar y entre Punta Paloma y Tarifa; con levante y mareas muertas aumenta el tiempo de residencia en el lado occidental del Estrecho). En conjunto, estos procesos fomentan la retención de aguas enriquecidas en el lado Oeste del Estrecho, explicando las altas concentraciones de clorofila detectadas en numerosos estudios.}, organization = {UCA-SOCIB}, keywords = {HFR_Progs}, keywords = {High Frequency Radar}, keywords = {Lagrangian trajectories}, keywords = {Open-boundary Modal Analysis (OMA)}, keywords = {particle tracking}, keywords = {residence time}, keywords = {surface currents}, keywords = {Strait of Gibraltar}, keywords = {(sub)mesoscale}, title = {Particle retention at the northwestern coastal margin of the Strait of Gibraltar with the estimation of residence times using HFR measurements}, author = {García Steinebronn, Daisy Pemba}, }
