El frexnense Francisco Arceo, considerado uno de los más grandes cirujanos europeos del siglo XVI, fue médico del Santo Oficio de la Inquisición de Llerena. Una de sus misiones consistirá en advertir del estado en que se encontraba el reo, no para dar por finalizado el acto, sino para darle un descanso con el fin de que se recuperase y volver al tormento. Los tipos de tormentos eran bastante sofisticados y generaban escenas escalofriantes, como los provocados por el suplicio conocido como cabeza de hierro o el tormento de la gota de agua. Dada la intensa actividad del Tribunal en los años centrales del siglo XVI, no debió faltarle trabajo a Arceo, aunque según algunos tratadistas debió cobrar poco y tarde con un salario en torno a los 50.000 maravedís anuales.}, abstract = {This essay highlights the role played by doctors in the Spanish inquisition tribunals. Francisco de Arceo, born in Fregenal de la Sierra, was considered to be one of the most important European surgeons in the XVIth century and served as a doctor of the Spanish Inquistion in LLerena, Extremadura. One of his tasks was to check the condition of the defendant but not with the intention of stopping the torture process but to take breaks which allowed the accused to recover somehow and later to keep on torturing. The different methods of torture were chilling, sophisticated and terrifying, specially two of them known as Iron head and Water drop. Given the intense and regular activities in the Inquisition tribunals in the middle of the XVIth century, we can assert that Arceo was a busy man although, according to some contemporary treatise writers, he was not well paid and his 50.000 maravedis annual salary came late}, publisher = {Sociedad Extremeña de Historia}, keywords = {Inquisición}, keywords = {siglo XVI}, keywords = {Renacimiento}, keywords = {Historia de la medicina}, title = {Francisco Arceo, médico del Santo Oficio de la Inquisición de Llerena}, author = {Cobos Bueno, José M. and Vallejo Villalobos, José Ramón}, }
