This is an important therapeutic tool against obesity and currently is also considered an alternative therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus, which are called metabolic surgery when pursuing this end. But little is known about the changes occurring in the endocrine pancreas and allow the remission of diabetes after surgery. Our research group has focused on the removal of fifty percent of the small intestine to represent the effects on the pancreas by this surgery, given the results obtained with healthy rats in a previous study. This work demonstrates an increased pancreatic beta cell mass after twelve weeks of bariatric surgery, at the expense of increased proliferation processes. In the current study we repeated the experience with rats, which are normal-weight type 2 diabetes. They have led to a five-week survival after intestine resection of fifty percent. To study the effects on the endocrine pancreas we quantified pancreatic beta cell mass and have analyzed their anti-insulin histomorphometry by immunofluorescence. Our results showed no statistically significant differences between the study group and control group in the parameters analyzed, but an upward trend in the beta cell mass of rats which have undergone resection of fifty percent of the small intestine. This may be due either to the limitations of our work, or that need a longer survival for the enterohormonales effects triggered by bariatric surgery on cellular processes. %K diabetes %K Pancreas %K cirugía bariátrica %K ratas Goto-Kakizaki %K Masa beta %~ Universidad de Cádiz
