The aim of the study is to analyse the way in which Spanish as a first language (L1) is used in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) lessons. This research studies, both in a quantitative and qualitative way, the amount of L1 produced by one teacher during fifteen EFL lessons, as well as the purposes why the L1 was used in EFL teaching. Therefore, an analysis of fifteen EFL classes from two school years (Year 1 and 5) is included in this research, enabling not only to display the general amount of L1 used in EFL teaching, but also to show a wider view of how the use of the L1 changes and evolves concerning the different students’ groups assisted. Direct observation and online interviews arranged with the two EFL teachers involved in the investigation were the two principal tools used for collecting the data analysed in this study. Finally, due to the high amount of L1 used in EFL lessons, this research also provides the reader with recommendations, which are oriented to teachers, about the ways in which the L1 should be used in EFL teaching, for instance. %K First language %K Foreign Language %K Spanish as a First Language %K English as a Foreign Language %K Use of the L1 %K Analysis of the L1 Interventions %K Purposes %K Beliefs %K Primary school %K Research %~ Universidad de Cádiz
