Therefore, it is essential that the UCCM safeguard the integrity of the ecosystems, avoiding the degradation of the natural areas. Despite the legal guarantee of the conservation of the natural aspects in the UCCM, external stressors can degrade the environment and compromise the determined objectives for the protected area. Pollution caused by chemicals is one of the factors that threaten the integrity of protected coastal and marine ecosystems. However, at the global level, studies evaluating pollution and its impacts within protected areas are scarce. Therefore, through a systematic review of publications indexed on a scientific databases, this work developed an initial diagnosis of the studies that evaluate the environmental quality of the UCCM. We found only 11 studies, concentrated in the Southeast region of Brazil. The studies were carried out in six UCCM, four in São Paulo and two in Rio de Janeiro, of five categories: Environmental Protection Area and Extractive Reserve, classified as Sustainable Use; and among those of Integral Protection, Ecological Station, Park and Biological Reserve. At the national level, the six UCCM studied reach only 3.09% of the existing 194 UCCM. Some type of environmental degradation within the UCCM was reported by seven studies in half of the UCCM studied. By indicating little scientific knowledge about chemical pollution within UCCM and environmental degradation in some of the UCCM studied, the results of this work confirm that the undervalued impacts of chemical pollution are worrying and crucial factors to be overcome in order to achieve biodiversity conservation objectives. It is suggested that existing research groups in the area of ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry should consider the urgent need for environmental assessment studies on chemical pollution in UCCM, possibly incorporating the research line on future projects. %K Coastal and marine ecosystems %K biodiversity conservation %K marine ecotoxicology %K scientific knowledge %K empty review %K ecossistemas costeiros e marinhos %K conservação da biodiversidade %K ecotoxicologia marinha %K conhecimento científico %K empty review %~ Universidad de Cádiz
