%X The lack of evaluation tools that integrate and articulate the complexity of the issues involved in urban
coastlines is one of the great challenges of public coastal policy in South America. The inclusion of monitoring and control instruments that allow to visualize
and identify the situation status, trends and pressures,
as well as changes in the quality of life of the inhabitants, they are necessary for the generation of responsible and participative policies. In this sense, the systems
of indicators are a clear option and a useful tool for
evaluation. This work develops a sustainability indicators system that was applied in the Central Beach of
the Balneario Camboriú city and the east coastal zone
in the city of Montevideo. The realization consisted
in three phases related to each other. In the first phase fulfillment the analysis and identification of key issues, in relation with the Indicator System proposed by the
Observatory of the Sea and French Littoral. The phase two was the valoration and selection of indicators. Finally, in the phase three there was evaluation and comparation of the study cases through the application and development of sustainability indicators that was selected. The work designs a useful procedure for the evaluation
and validation actions in urban coasts, inside of the processes of judicious decision-making. Presents, expressed
in concrete measures, a quantitative evaluation of the cases of study that allows comparison. Concludes with a
comparative discussion about the results and the applied method.
