Title 15 (De officio vicarii) of Book I of the Codex Theodosianus is dedicated thematically to the position of vicarius, confirming his relevance in the Later Roman Empire. It contains 17 imperials constitutions, the penultimate of which, dated year 401 (CTh. 1.15.16) and addressed to one of the vicarius Hispaniarum, shows the peculiarity of being the last one sent to an official in charge placed in the Diocesis Hispaniarum. If we consider it in relation to the set of laws related to the officials in the territory, and especially those to the different vicarii, some observations can be made about the traditionally estimated marginal situation in the region. In addition the analysis of others sources suggests that vicarius Hispaniarum may not only have performed civilian but also military functions. In this sense it would be possible to discuss the usually agreed distinction of competencies initiated from the Diocletian reform.

Genetic diversity of yeasts isolated from Eurasian populations of Vitis vinifera ssp Sylvestris (Gmelin) Hegi

Genetic diversity of yeasts isolated from Eurasian populations of Vitis vinifera ssp Sylvestris (Gmelin) Hegi

Vitis vinifera L. ssp. Sylvestris (Gmelin) Hegi is recognized as the dioecious parental generation of
today’s cultivars. Climatic change and the arrival in Europe of pathogens and pests have led it to be included
on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 1997. At best of our knowledge, no studies on microbial
populations of grape-berry surfaces have been done. The present work has been focused on the study of yeast
occurrence and diversity on grape-berries collected from wild vines. Final outputs have allowed: i)to obtain
precise information about yeast communities; ii) to provide an objective framework for the classification
of the broadest range of species according to their extinction risk; iii) to select attractive yeast strains for
their biotechnological potential, offering new opportunities to winemakers. Sampling plan was performed in
Azerbaijan, Georgia, Italy, Romania and Spain. In all, 3180 yeast colonies were isolated and identified as
belonging to 50 species, including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, by 26S rDNA D1/D2 domains and ITS region
sequencing. Isolates of S. cerevisiae were also analysed by SSR-PCR obtaining 163 different genotypes. This
study highlights the biodiversity potential of pristine environments that still represent a fascinating source to
face common problems in winemaking.

Development of a chemical model to predict the doses of calcium sulfate and tartaric acid to acidify musts in Sherry area

Development of a chemical model to predict the doses of calcium sulfate and tartaric acid to acidify musts in Sherry area
Gómez, J.; Palacios Santander, José María; Lasanta Melero, Cristina; Cubillana Aguilera, Laura; Arnedo, R.; Casas, J. A.; Amilibia, B.; LLoret, I.
Calcium sulfate is normally used as a complementary acidifier combined with tartaric acid. The doses corresponding to each one depend on the desired reduction of pH and on the composition of musts. However, considering that there are several interrelated chemical equilibria implied (tartaric acid dissociation, calcium tartrate and potassium bitartrate precipitation, etc.), it is not easy to predict the effect on pH of a mixed tartaric acid and calcium sulfate addition and to determine the necessary doses to reach the final pH required by the winemaker. In a model previously developed by the authors, the prediction of pH after an acidification was properly achieved. On the contrary, in the same model the prediction of the necessary doses of acidifiers to achieve a desired pH have higher errors due to some parameters, as pH and pK, are found as exponential functions in the equations. This work develops and verify the necessary corrections to the models so that appropriate predictions of the doses are obtained. With these corrections, prediction errors of less than 5% were obtained for all doses of acidifiers, confirming the good comprehension of the chemical equilibria involved in this practice.

Characterization and Performance Evaluation of ESP32 for Real-time Synchronized Sensor Networks

In recent years, technological advancement characterized by heightened connectivity and digitization has revolutionized our interaction with the world. This evolution has been exemplified by the emergence of the Internet of Things, which has introduced a new era of digitization and automation, primarily propelled by devices based on the ESP32 microcontroller. This study seeks to comprehensively evaluate and characterize a fully functional sensor network built upon the ESP32 microcontroller. The evaluation covers three key aspects: network performance, the ESP32's built-in ADC peripheral, and the data acquisition system. The ESP32 device has demonstrated its capability to consistently sample sensors at a high rate with remarkable stability. The ESP32's built-in ADC exhibited undesirable behavior for analog devices, attributed to noise and non-linearity. As a result, in applications requiring precision with analog sensors, the utilization of a cost-effective external ADC, as employed in this study, is recommended. Finally, during the network analysis of the sensor network, no issues were identified. The data acquisition system exhibited no bottlenecks, and packet losses remained minimal, regardless of the sampling period.
