<title>Revisiting the Femme Fatale: The Archetype Subversion in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive</title>

<description>Revisiting the Femme Fatale: The Archetype Subversion in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive
Mosquera Ramírez, Rodrigo Agustín
El cine negro estableció la figura de la femme fatale como uno de los arquetipos femeninos más reconocibles del cine del siglo XX, asociada habitualmente con la manipulación, el poder sexual y la caída de los protagonistas masculinos. Sin embargo, la evolución del film noir al neo-noir ha transformado significativamente la representación y la función de este arquetipo. Este trabajo examina la figura de la femme fatale en el cine de David Lynch, centrándose principalmente en Mulholland Drive (2001) y Terciopelo azul (1986). Mediante un análisis crítico respaldado por la teoría cinematográfica feminista y los estudios sobre el film noir y el neo-noir, el trabajo explora cómo Lynch reconfigura las dinámicas tradicionales entre la femme fatale y el personaje principal. De este modo, demuestra que la femme fatale no se transforma simplemente, sino que la propia fatalidad se desplaza de la mujer hacia la mirada que la construye como una figura peligrosa, contribuyendo así a los debates más amplios sobre el género y la identidad en el cine neo-noir.; Film noir established the figure of the femme fatale as one of the most recognizable&#13;
female archetypes in twentieth-century cinema, typically associated with manipulation,&#13;
sexual power, and the downfall of male protagonists. However, the evolution from noir&#13;
to neo-noir has significantly changed the representation and function of this archetype.&#13;
This document examines the figure of the femme fatale in the cinema of David Lynch,&#13;
focusing primarily on Mulholland Drive (2001) and Blue Velvet (1986). Through a critical&#13;
analysis supported by feminist film theory and studies of film noir and neo-noir, the&#13;
project explores how Lynch reconfigures the traditional dynamics between the femme&#13;
fatale and the main character, demonstrating that the femme fatale is not simply&#13;
transformed, but fatality itself is relocated from the woman to the gaze that constructs her&#13;
as dangerous, contributing to broader debates on gender and identity in neo-noir cinema.

<title>The Language of Power: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Dystopian Fiction and American Political Speech</title>

<description>The Language of Power: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Dystopian Fiction and American Political Speech
Rodríguez Marzo, Marta
Political discourse constitutes an essential tool for the construction of ideology and power exercise in society. In dystopian fictional and real-world political contexts, political actors employ persuasive linguistic strategies to influence the public and reinforce their authority. The purpose of this study is to analyze the political discourse in both contexts, with the objective of finding significant similarities, through the examination of five linguistic features, and their subsequent discursive and social practice.&#13;
The results reveal strong similarities between fictional and non-fictional rhetoric, particularly in the use of personal and social deixis in terms of group polarization. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that dystopian fiction exaggerates discursive mechanisms already present in contemporary political communication.

<title>A functionalist approach to literary translation: Analysis of culturemes in Intemperie</title>

<description>A functionalist approach to literary translation: Analysis of culturemes in Intemperie
Morales Delgado, Juan Manuel
This dissertation aims to examine how culturemes can be translated in light of Skopos theory. It focuses on literary translation, particularly applied to Jesús Carrasco 's novel Intemperie. Through a descriptive and comparative study, this research seeks to evaluate the strategies and techniques employed in the English translation of Intemperie, Out in the Open, by Margaret Jull Costa. A selection of 17 culturemes from Carrasco’s original text will be analysed and classified into four categories: natural environment, social culture, cultural heritage, and linguistic culture. The results highlight the effectiveness of “dethroning the source text”, exhibiting how functionalist theory can ensure readability whilst balancing cultural specificity.

<title>Pragmatic Failure in the Interpretation of Irony by EFL Learners</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10498/40023</link>
<description>Pragmatic Failure in the Interpretation of Irony by EFL Learners
Utrera Ramírez, Inmaculada
This study examines pragmatic failure in the interpretation of irony by EFL learners at &#13;
a B2.2 level. The objectives are to compare whether learner's age influences their ability to &#13;
correctly interpret ironic utterances in English as a Foreign Language (EFL-) and to identify &#13;
the main features that cause EFL learners to misinterpret ironic meaning in English. Using a &#13;
qualitative approach, data were collected through focus group interviews with 11 participants, &#13;
divided into two age groups, who watched clips from Friends and How I Met Your Mother. &#13;
Generally, participants accurately identified irony by relying on contextual and non-verbal &#13;
cues. Findings suggest that pragmatic competence involves linguistic and multimodal &#13;
knowledge in inferential interpretation. The conclusions highlight the pedagogical value of &#13;
authentic audiovisual materials for developing pragmatic competence in EFL contexts and &#13;
suggest future lines of research.; Este estudio examina el fallo pragmático en la interpretación de la ironía en &#13;
estudiantes de inglés como lengua extranjera (EFL) de nivel B2.2, para comparar si la edad &#13;
de los estudiantes influye en su capacidad para interpretar correctamente enunciados irónicos &#13;
en inglés, e identificar las principales características que provocan que los estudiantes de EFL &#13;
malinterpreten el significado irónico en inglés. Utilizando un enfoque cualitativo, los datos &#13;
fueron recogidos mediante entrevistas de grupo focal con once participantes, divididos en dos &#13;
grupos de edad, que visualizaron clips de Friends y How I Met Your Mother. En general, los &#13;
participantes identificaron la ironía con precisión basándose en pistas contextuales y no &#13;
verbales. Los hallazgos sugieren que la competencia pragmática implica conocimiento &#13;
lingüístico y multimodal en la interpretación inferencial. Las conclusiones destacan el valor &#13;
pedagógico de los materiales auténticos para fomentar la conciencia pragmática en contextos &#13;
EFL y sugieren futuras líneas de investigación.
