Which came first: the chicken or the egg? Analysing the bidirectionality of non-academic collaborations and scientific teams productivity
Frutos Belizón, Jesús de; García Carbonell, Natalia
Collaboration between universities and non-academic organisations plays a vital role in addressing current societal demands. This study explored how such partnerships influence the productivity of traditional academic research by focusing on public universities and scientific teams. It examined the bidirectionality between scientific output and non-academic collaboration and the moderating effect of team knowledge diversity. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis on a sample of 277 Spanish scientific teams confirmed the bidirectional link between research productivity and non-academic collaborations—represented by an inverted U-shaped curve—and revealed a surprising negative moderating effect of team knowledge diversity. These results offer valuable insights for networks and research team management, particularly in balancing research productivity and academic engagement with society through non-academic collaborations.

Early Prediction of Academic Performance in a Database Course Using Moodle Interaction Logs

Early Prediction of Academic Performance in a Database Course Using Moodle Interaction Logs
Balderas Alberico, Antonio; Caballero Hernández, Juan Antonio; Palomo Duarte, Manuel; Muñoz Ortega, Andrés; Dodero Beardo, Juan Manuel
Academic failure and high dropout rates remain persistent challenges in STEM education, particularly in core disciplines like Computer Science. Using Moodle interaction logs for a compulsory course on Database Systems (183,917 log records from 131 students), we engineered 16 behavioral features that capture engagement, regularity, resource diversity, and temporal activity patterns. Four classification models were trained and evaluated using 5-fold cross-validation and an independent test set: Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, k-Nearest Neighbors, and Logistic Regression. The best-performing models reached an AUC of up to 0.812 (Logistic Regression) and 0.809 (Random Forest) on the independent test set. Notably, Random Forest demonstrated a recall of 81.2% for at-risk students, suggesting its potential suitability as the basis for an Early Warning System (EWS). Feature importance analysis reveals that resource access, total engagement, and formative quiz interaction are the strongest predictors of the final outcome. Furthermore, activity within the first four weeks ranks among the top six predictors, providing empirical evidence that early behavioral signals carry significant predictive power. These results suggest that identification of at-risk students is highly feasible and actionable within the first month of instruction, offering a robust foundation for automated pedagogical interventions.

This instrument is a comprehensive questionnaire designed by the aforementioned research team for the multidimensional assessment of emerging psychosocial risks linked to digitalization, hyperconnectivity, and the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace. The tool employs a highly robust hybrid methodological model that integrates validated international scales—such as the Technostress model by Salanova et al. (WONT/NTP 730) and the ECIPQ for cyberbullying—with technical indicators from reference organizations including EU-OSHA, ISTAS-21, and Eurobarometer, as well as original items developed by the team members based on scientific literature.

The questionnaire is structured into specific blocks addressing ICT use, algorithmic management and "algorithmic efficiency," the digital divide, workplace cyberbullying, digital disconnection, and information transparency. It also incorporates original dimensions on humble leadership, happy leadership, and self-perceived happiness as types of leadership that foster well-being in the workplace context.

This document is a specific adaptation for the project PID2024-161526OB-I00, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the State Research Agency (AEI), and co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF/FEDER). It is based on the original protocol developed by members of this team (LAB*8_3), authorized by the Ethics Committee of the University of Cádiz (CEENB-OMGs 057_2025 R2) for the university environment—and applied to the workforce of the University of Cádiz—having extended its scope to workers across all economic sectors to globally analyze the impact of technological processes on occupational well-being.
