<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10498/39997</link>
<description>The Development of Novel Electrochemical Sensors Based on Innovative Materials
Berni, Achraf
Over recent decades, electrochemical technologies have experienced significant advancements,&#13;
offering simplicity, high sensitivity, rapid response, and cost-effectiveness compared to&#13;
conventional analytical techniques. These advantages have enabled their widespread application&#13;
in environmental monitoring, food safety, and clinical diagnostics. In this context, this thesis&#13;
focuses on the design and development of advanced electrochemical platforms based on innovative&#13;
materials and fabrication strategies, aiming to enhance performance and broaden functionality for&#13;
both sensing and energy-related applications.&#13;
The first part of this thesis is devoted to the development of laser-induced graphene (LIG)-based&#13;
electrochemical sensors. It explores the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) porous laser-scribed&#13;
graphene electrodes and their functionalization with conducting polymers, such as overoxidized&#13;
polypyrrole, for the selective detection of neurotransmitters, particularly, dopamine. Additionally,&#13;
a sensitive sensing platform for paracetamol detection is developed using bare LIG structures,&#13;
while enzyme-free glucose sensing is achieved through the integration of gold nanostructures onto&#13;
mesoporous LIG. This section also investigates the transferability of LIG-based materials toward&#13;
practical applications, including the use of fused filament fabrication to stamp conductive LIG&#13;
patterns onto 3D-printed substrates for bioanalytical device development. Notably, this work was&#13;
conducted as part of a mobility internship in the University of Teramo, Italy.&#13;
The second part focuses on laser-based synthesis strategies for functional nanomaterials, aiming&#13;
to establish a one-step, efficient approach for the fabrication of nanozyme platforms with enhanced&#13;
catalytic activity. This section highlights the versatility of laser processing in tuning material&#13;
composition, morphology, and functionality, enabling the development of highly active and stable&#13;
nanozyme systems for advanced electrochemical applications.&#13;
The third part addresses green and innovative top-down and bottom-up approaches for the&#13;
development of noble-metal-free electrocatalysts dedicated to water splitting. By combining these&#13;
strategies, efficient catalysts are engineered for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and&#13;
oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In particular, dual-laser writing techniques enable the direct&#13;
fabrication of 3D graphene–transition metal dichalcogenide hybrid architectures, exhibiting&#13;
remarkable catalytic performance across a wide pH range.&#13;
In conclusion, this work demonstrates that integrating advanced carbon-based nanostructures with&#13;
innovative laser-assisted fabrication techniques provides versatile, scalable, and environmentally&#13;
sustainable solutions to overcome the limitations of conventional electrochemical systems. These&#13;
findings open new pathways for the development of next-generation electrochemical devices,&#13;
bridging analytical sensing and energy conversion technologies; En las últimas décadas, las tecnologías electroquímicas han experimentado un notable crecimiento,&#13;
debido a su simplicidad, alta sensibilidad, rápida respuesta y bajo coste en comparación con los&#13;
métodos analíticos convencionales. Estas ventajas han favorecido su implementación en diversos&#13;
ámbitos, como la monitorización ambiental, la seguridad alimentaria y el diagnóstico clínico. En&#13;
este contexto, la presente tesis doctoral tiene como objetivo el diseño y desarrollo de plataformas&#13;
electroquímicas avanzadas basadas en materiales innovadores y procesos de fabricación&#13;
originales, con el fin de mejorar su rendimiento y ampliar sus funcionalidades en aplicaciones de&#13;
detección y conversión de energía.&#13;
La primera parte está dedicada al desarrollo de sensores electroquímicos basados en grafeno&#13;
inducido por láser (LIG). Se centra en la fabricación de electrodos de grafeno poroso&#13;
tridimensional obtenidos mediante grabado láser, así como en su funcionalización con polímeros&#13;
conductores, en particular, el polipirrol sobreoxidado, para la detección selectiva de&#13;
neurotransmisores como la dopamina. También se desarrollan dispositivos para la detección de&#13;
paracetamol y glucosa (sin enzimas), utilizando respectivamente estructuras LIG no modificadas&#13;
y arquitecturas mesoporosas decoradas con nanoestructuras de oro. Esta parte aborda, además, la&#13;
transferibilidad de estos materiales hacia dispositivos aplicados, especialmente mediante&#13;
fabricación aditiva (deposición de filamento fundido) para la integración de patrones conductores&#13;
sobre sustratos impresos en tres dimensiones. Parte de este trabajo se llevó a cabo en el marco de&#13;
una estancia de movilidad internacional en la Universidad de Teramo (Italia).&#13;
La segunda parte trata del desarrollo de estrategias de síntesis asistida por láser para la elaboración&#13;
de nanomateriales funcionales. El objetivo es establecer un enfoque de una sola etapa que permita&#13;
la fabricación de plataformas tipo nanozima con actividad catalítica mejorada. Se pone énfasis en&#13;
el control de las propiedades estructurales y químicas de los materiales mediante los parámetros&#13;
del láser, con el fin de optimizar sus prestaciones analíticas.&#13;
La tercera parte está dedicada al desarrollo de electrocatalizadores libres de metales nobles para la&#13;
electrólisis del agua, mediante enfoques innovadores de tipo ‘top-down’ y ‘bottom-up’,&#13;
respetuosos con el medio ambiente. Estos trabajos conducen al desarrollo de materiales eficientes&#13;
para las reacciones de evolución de hidrógeno (HER) y de oxígeno (OER). En particular, las&#13;
estrategias de escritura láser dual permiten la síntesis directa de arquitecturas híbridas&#13;
tridimensionales basadas en grafeno y dicalcogenuros de metales de transición, que presentan una&#13;
elevada actividad electrocatalítica en un amplio rango de pH.&#13;
En conclusión, esta tesis demuestra que la combinación de nanomateriales avanzados y procesos&#13;
de fabricación innovadores constituye un enfoque prometedor para el desarrollo de dispositivos&#13;
electroquímicos eficientes, sostenibles y fácilmente transferibles. Estos resultados abren nuevas&#13;
perspectivas para el diseño de sistemas integrados destinados tanto a la detección analítica como&#13;
a aplicaciones energéticas.; Au cours des dernières décennies, les technologies électrochimiques ont connu un essor&#13;
considérable, en raison de leur simplicité, de leur sensibilité élevée, de leur rapidité de réponse et&#13;
de leur faible coût par rapport aux méthodes analytiques conventionnelles. Ces atouts ont favorisé&#13;
leur déploiement dans des domaines variés tels que la surveillance environnementale, la sécurité&#13;
alimentaire et le diagnostic clinique. Dans ce cadre, cette thèse vise la conception et le&#13;
développement de plateformes électrochimiques avancées reposant sur des matériaux innovants et&#13;
des procédés de fabrication originaux, afin d’améliorer leurs performances et d’étendre leurs&#13;
fonctionnalités pour des applications en détection et en conversion d’énergie.&#13;
La première partie est consacrée au développement de capteurs électrochimiques à base de&#13;
graphène induit par laser (LIG). Elle porte sur la fabrication d’électrodes de graphène poreux&#13;
tridimensionnel obtenues par écriture laser, ainsi que sur leur fonctionnalisation par des polymères&#13;
conducteurs, notamment le polypyrrole sur-oxydé, pour la détection sélective de&#13;
neurotransmetteurs tels que la dopamine. Des dispositifs dédiés à la détection du paracétamol et&#13;
du glucose (sans enzyme) sont également développés, en exploitant respectivement des structures&#13;
LIG non modifiées et des architectures mésoporeuses décorées de nanostructures d’or. Cette partie&#13;
aborde en outre la transférabilité de ces matériaux LIG vers des dispositifs applicatifs, notamment&#13;
via la fabrication additive (dépôt de filament fondu) pour l’intégration de motifs conducteurs sur&#13;
des substrats imprimés en trois dimensions. Une partie de ces travaux a été réalisée dans le cadre&#13;
d’un stage de mobilité internationale à Teramo (Italie).&#13;
La deuxième partie traite du développement de stratégies de synthèse assistée par laser pour&#13;
l’élaboration de nanomatériaux fonctionnels. L’objectif est de mettre en place une approche en&#13;
une étape permettant la fabrication de plateformes de type nanozyme présentant une activité&#13;
catalytique améliorée. L’accent est mis sur le contrôle des propriétés structurales et chimiques des&#13;
matériaux par les paramètres laser, en vue d’optimiser leurs performances analytiques.&#13;
La troisième partie est dédiée à l’élaboration d’électrocatalyseurs sans métaux nobles pour&#13;
l’électrolyse de l’eau, selon des approches innovantes de type top-down et bottom-up,&#13;
respectueuses de l’environnement. Ces travaux conduisent au développement de matériaux&#13;
performants pour les réactions de dégagement d’hydrogène (HER) et d’oxygène (OER). En&#13;
particulier, des stratégies d’écriture laser double permettent la synthèse directe d’architectures&#13;
hybrides tridimensionnelles à base de graphène et de dichalcogénures de métaux de transition,&#13;
présentant une activité électrocatalytique élevée sur une large gamme de pH.&#13;
En conclusion, cette thèse démontre que la combinaison de nanomatériaux avancés et de procédés&#13;
de fabrication innovantes constitue une approche prometteuse pour le développement de dispositifs&#13;
électrochimiques performants, durables et facilement transposables. Ces travaux ouvrent des&#13;
perspectives pour la conception de systèmes intégrés à la fois pour la détection analytique et les&#13;
applications énergétiques.

<title>The role of penguins in the Recycling of Trace Metals in Antarctica and their Ecological Impact</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10498/37269</link>
<description>The role of penguins in the Recycling of Trace Metals in Antarctica and their Ecological Impact
Sparaventi, Erica
The Antarctic continent and the surrounding Southern Ocean play a fundamental role in regulating climate, ocean circulation and global ecosystems. Understanding how biogeochemical cycles drive primary production and the Southern Ocean ecosystem is crucial for elucidating the ecological functioning of this region. In this context, biological recycling is considered a key mechanism for the retention and supply of Trace Metals in surface waters. Through this process, marine organisms contribute to the nutrient pool that supports phytoplankton community's growth, limited in many areas due to the depletion of iron. Despite the attention focused on krill and whales, whose excretion products are recognised as the main iron recycling mechanism in the Antarctic ecosystem, the role of penguins, one of the most emblematic organisms of the region, in the biogeochemical cycles of the Southern Ocean has not been addressed.&#13;
The central axis of this Doctoral Thesis is the study of guano from two Antarctic penguin species, involving a multidisciplinary approach encompassing both the chemical characterisation in terms of dissolved Trace Metals and particulate biogeochemical components, together with the assessment of its effects on organisms of the coastal ecosystem based on ecotoxicological assays.&#13;
The results derived from a literature review on metal contents in different body tissues, feathers and penguin guano, with our guano samples analysis indicated that guano is the main reservoir of Trace Metals considered essential (Chapter 3). Guano conteins concentration of Cu (2.0 ± 1.4) x 102, Fe (4.1 ± 2.9) x 102, Mn (30 ± 34) and Zn (210 ± 90) (g g-1 dry weight), that are of the same order of magnitude as those reported for whale faeces: Cu (2.9 ± 2.4) x 102, Fe (1.5 ± 1.4) x 102, Mn (28 ± 17) and Zn (6.2 ± 4.3) x 102 (g g-1 dry weight). This allowed to provide evidence for the potential role of penguins in the recycling of Trace Metals.&#13;
The challenge of characterising the coastal waters around the penguin colonies, which are dangerous and difficult to access, required the development of a novel water sampling system operated from drone (Chapter 4). This automated water autosampler (AWA) system onboard a drone, was effective for the determination of dissolved elements in coastal aquatic environments, particurarly in harsh or inaccessible areas, like those sorrounding penguin colonies.&#13;
Through the chemical characterisation of penguin guano (Chapter 5), it was estimated that with an average guano concentration of 3 mg Fe g-1, Chinstrap penguin populations can recycle 521 tonnes iron yr-1 in the Southern Ocean waters. Furthermore, the potential contribution of guano to carbon export was considered in relation to the presence of microplastics. The highest concentration found in guano was the smallest fraction (25 50 m), suggesting that it may alter guano sinking pathways, thereby affecting carbon export.&#13;
Finally, due to the presence of potentially toxic Trace Metals in guano, exposure experiments were carried out to assess the possible impact on Antarctic biota (Chapter 6). A wide panel of ecotoxicological responses was investigated after the exposure of marine organisms belonging to distinct levels of the Antarctic food chain to different concentrations of guano. The results indicated that guano boosted phytoplankton growth, which allowed an estimation of 0.47 ± 0.22 g C m-2 yr-1, as annual net primary productivity driven by the input of iron recycled by Chinstrap penguin populations in Antarctic waters. On the other hand, slight bioaccumulation in tissues of some Trace Metals (e.g. Cd, Cu, Zn and As) and a decrease in antioxidant enzyme activities (e.g. EROD, GST and GR) upon exposure to guano were observed in the Antarctic clams. Lastly, a clear avoidance response was observed in amphipods, indicating that guano could shape the structure of amphipod communities, before reaching toxic levels.

<title>Optimización del proceso de obtención de extractos de jengibre (Zingiber officinale)</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10498/36269</link>
