Abstract

Urban sprawl has led to land fragmentation. Modest private subdivisions have gained an increasing influence on the city’s growth. Since the 1950s, some thirty peripheral urban neighbourhoods have sprung up in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. A prototypical example is that of the Sant Josep neighbourhood, located in the municipality of Sant Vicenç dels Horts. An analysis is conducted of the relevant information pertaining to the plan which enabled this neighbourhood to be united with the formal city, for the subsequent development of plans for tackling these spaces. The general proposals contained within the Special Interior Reform Plan for the Sant Josep neighbourhood are analysed and evaluated, together with the questions and issues which influenced the connection of the formal and informal city. The results show that the neighbourhood rehabilitation plan has prevented indirect speculative intervention and demonstrates its contribution to the restoration of urban structure.
