Abstract

This article explores the influences of the debates and constitutional text approved in Cadiz in 1812 on Banda Oriental del Uruguay territories, during two decades that include the resistance of the “loyal Spaniards” in Montevideo, the confederate project of José Artigas, the incorporation to the constitutional monarchies of Portugal and Brazil and the creation of an independent State. Moreover, it poses how the doctrinaire discussions about constitutional monarchy or representative republic, sovereignty of the nation or sovereignty of the peoples, and centralism or federalism, reflected longstanding jurisdictional conflicts and different stances regarding the upheaval of the social order.
