Abstract

The purpose of this article is to demystify the idea that only two sexes (male and female) and two genders exist (masculine and feminine), questioning the limits of a biological perspective. To do such thing, different ethnographic examples are examined to expand the horizons of the binary sex and gender systems. Likewise, the paper presents the existence of more than two genders in other cultures and the possibility of a change in gender over the life of an individual, therefore responding to the cultural conditions of different human groups. Finally, we mean to problematize the binary sex/gender system in western societies because it leads to the understanding of inter-sex as a pathology instead of seeing it as an example of human diversity.
