Abstract

This research aims to highlight on the logic and meaning underlying spirit possession cults through a case study in the town of Bahia Honda (Artemisa, Cuba). The religiosity experimented by the people of Bahia is conformed by the fusion of elements coming from the contact between Catholicism, Kardecist Spiritism and cults of African origin, such as Santería and Palo Monte, associated with the belief in mystical entities, gods, dead or ancestors that are incarnated in the body of agents to support and guide everyday life. Based on the ethnographic method, I will show the structure of two religious agencies: the Nelly cult center and the Isabel cult center. I will describe the spiritual and worldly factors that constitute the mystical practices studied and the relationships established between them. According to other existing researches, my particular approach is that I look at the machinery through which cult groups use their social surroundings to create "corporal alternatives" that rework, produce and disproduce social reality, integrating it into their representative frames, in their spaces and ritual practices. The Cuban religious field is characterized by the horizontality of its various manifestations. There is no dominant official religion established in public institutions as occurs in societies such as Spain or Brazil with Catholicism. The multiplicity of planes in which Cuban religiosity is constructed creates a fragmented structure witch can feed itself without losing autonomy. Spirit possession cults in Cuba are alternative religions.
