Abstract

A 116,23 m3 High Rate Algal Pond (HRAP) was operated during 45 days, 12 in batch mode and 33 being feeded by pretreated urban wastewater. The main target was to study the nutrient removal and the microorganisms’ growth rate. During the experiment the importance of the light for this kind of systems with a photosynthetic metabolism was corroborated and also its influence in the rest of variables. It has been concluded that a pH and/or a Dissolved Oxygen (DO) probe are very useful tools to monitor the health of the culture in the reactor and to know the intensity of the photosynthetic activity without the need of more specific equipments or measures. On the other hand, the rate of nutrient removal and biomass growth was defined, as well as the minimum hydraulic retention times (HRT) recommended to avoid culture washout (2,7 ± 1,14 days), achieve a nitrogen reduction up to 15 mg·L-1 (2,2 ± 0,76 days) and a phosphorous concentration under 2 mg·L-1 (2,36 ± 0,57 days). Although, it was not possible to adjust a model that, from the batch experiment data, could predict the continuous mode behaviour. During all the experiment COD was always lower than 125 mg·L-1 and nitrogen and phosphorous concentrations were under 15 and 2 mg·L-1, respectively. Given the results, Ficotreatment with a microalgae-bacteria consortia in a HRAP reactor come up as a remarkable alternative for urban wastewater treatment, being also economic and with a low maintenance need, suitable for small communities.
