Abstract

The longitudinal and tidal variations of the partial pressure of CO2 and the concentrations of dissolved CH4 and N2O in the Guadalquivir Estuary have been studied during Spring of 2019. For this, 2 samplings were carried out on board the UCADIZ under different conditions of tidal coefficient. The partial pressure of CO2 has been measured continuously with an automated pCO2 measuring system connected to the ship’s continuum and concentrations of dissolved CH4 and N2O by gas chromatograph. The concentration of the gases increases towards the inner part of the estuary due to the increase in the solubility of the gases at low salinities and the lateral discharges that contribute organic matter to the system. The partial pressure of CO2 increases from 540.60 μatm to 2092.4 μatm, the concentration of CH4 from 6.53 nM to 58.92 nM and the concentration of N2O from 6.82 nM to 74.36 nM from the marine zone to the fluvial zone. During tidal cycles, higher concentrations were obtained for the 3 gases during low tide, which suggests that the system exports CO2, CH4 and N2O to the continental shelf. Water - air fluxes are more intense in the fluvial zone (141.24 mmol m-2 d-1, 58.2 µmol m-2 d-1 and 69.99 µmol m-2 d-1 for CO2 CH4 and N2O respectively) than in the marine zone (4.04 mmol m-2 d-1, 11.07 µmol m-2 d-1 and -1.64 µmol m-2 d-1 for CO2, CH4 and N2O, respectively). There is an average increase in fluxes of 2.3 for CO2, of 2.85 for CH4 and 8.4 for N2O between high tide and low tide.
