Abstract

This article takes a brief look at the recent history of the visual arts in Guatemala, highlighting their contribution to the construction of this country following the civil war. For more than forty years, armed conflict raged through Guatemala, lacerating the country and decimating its most basic structures of coexistence. Art, in this case the visual arts, has been proposed as a tool for recovery, healing and memory that can contribute to self-observation and in some cases, reparation. In the text “Art that constructs history”, the author examines the narratives that have exerted greatest impact on symbolic construction in the post-war period. Artists, alternative projects, international initiatives and governmental processes have been the main players.
