Teatro por niños y para niños en la España de mediados del siglo XIX

Abstract

El cultivo y la práctica del teatro infantil, tanto el escrito para el consumo de los niños como para ser representado por estos, vivió en el siglo XIX un momento de gran expansión, paralelo al desarrollo general de la industria teatral en España. Pero junto a la dimensión prioritariamente moral y formativa de esta práctica, ligada a los colegios y la vida doméstica de las clases aristocráticas y burguesas, observamos asimismo en este período un interesante proceso de «profesionalización» comercial de unos espectáculos infantiles bastante alejados del ámbito escolar o doméstico, y la existencia de unos textos para niños en absoluto pueriles.

The cultivation and practice of children’s theater, both written for the consumption of children and to be represented by them, lived in the nineteenth century a moment of great expansion, parallel to the general development of the theater industry in Spain. But together with the priority moral and formative dimension of this practice, linked to the schools and domestic life of the aristocratic and bourgeois classes, we also observe in this period an interesting process of commercial «professionalization» of children’s shows quite far from the school environment or domestic, and the existence of texts for children at all childish.
