Rotalde, revolucionario y publicista: The shade of Riego

Abstract

Los días 5 y 24 de enero de 1820, Nicolás Santiago Rotalde intentó sendas proclamaciones de la Constitución de 1812 en Cádiz, con la intención de colaborar con el pronunciamiento de Rafael del Riego, ambas fracasaron, por lo que, tras la segunda, tuvo que huir de la ciudad. A partir de ese momento, Rotalde, que no cejó en la lucha por la libertad, se convirtió en un polémico publicista, dando a conocer sus ideas a través de periódicos y folletos, en los que justificaba sus acciones, mientras que culpaba a otros conocidos personajes del fracaso en la lucha por la libertad. Entre otros que citamos, publicó en Londres The shade of Riego, un texto prácticamente desconocido, que es el objeto de este trabajo.

On January 5th and 24th, 1820, Nicolás Santiago Rotalde tried to proclaim the 1812 Constitution in Cadiz, with the intention of collaborating with Rafael del Riego’s pronouncement. Both failed, so after the second, he had to flee the city. From that moment on, Rotalde, who did not give up the fight for freedom, became a controversial publicist, making his ideas known through newspapers and pamphlets, in which he justified his actions, while blaming other wellknown people for the failure of the fight for freedom. Among others that we quote, he published in London The shade of Riego, a practically unknown text, which is the object of this work.
