Abstract

The aim of this article is to present a study and translation of a representative part of Abū Madyan’s poetry, which consists of two parts. After a brief sketch of the master’s life, the second part focuses on the analysis of his poems: sources, themes and relationship between mystical experience and the use of language and symbols. An examination of his poetry reveals his influence on later Sufis poets like Ibn ˁArabī and al-Šuštarī, especially with regard to the symbols of woman, travel and wine.
