Abstract

Women prisoners in Spain account for 7.3% of the total prison population, so the prison system is not adapted to their needs. Moreover, they suffer a double discrimination: for having transgressed the traditional role assigned to them and the law. This study focuses on this population, and by taking a look at the first two seasons of the drama series Vis a Vis, which revolves around a women's prison, we will study the criminal typology and risk factors of female delinquency, institutional violence and psychosocial aspects —adaptation, relationships and stigma—. In this way, we will learn to what extent those responsible for the production were based on the situation of real female prisoners, due to the importance of the media in developing ideas and stereotypes in the imaginary of the audience.
