Abstract

This work focuses on the role of the Spanish navy in Philippines between 1785 and 1830. The objective is to examine the size, significance and functions of the navy in these islands in order to observe the priorities of the Spanish naval strategy in Asia. The specific issues are varied, such as the number of vessels allocated, the functions assigned, the nature of the commissions or the evolution of the naval jurisdiction. This paper deals with a complex problem that went hand in hand with the Spanish empire, the development of the Monarchy and the global context. The chronology studied is especially interesting because of deep and broad changes in Philippines, Asia, Spain and the world.
