Antecedentes de la cartografía batimétrica de México

Abstract

En la actualidad los océanos mexicanos son importantes por razones de carácter económico, social y climático; la privilegiada ubicación geográfica de México, entre dos océanos, explica en buena parte la enorme diversidad biológica y de medio ambiente que reúne, además de su amplia gama de recursos y ecosistemas marinos. Un factor determinante y que influye en la vida marina es sin duda el relieve que se encuentra sumergido en los océanos, ya que en él se originan diferentes ecosistemas en donde se concentran diversidad de especies. Asimismo, en el relieve se concentran gran diversidad de metales e hidrocarburos que constituyen en la actualidad otra riqueza para México. Ante esto, el Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI) se ha dado a la tarea de aportar datos e información geográfica del relieve submarino de México mediante cartografía batimétrica a fin de representar el piso marino para coadyuvar en la toma de decisiones en los ámbitos económico, político, social y técnico, así como para la planeación y desarrollo de infraestructura marina, y en su caso, para la prevención y atención de desastres.

At present the Mexican oceans are important for economic, social, and climatic reasons; Mexico’s privileged geographic location, between two oceans, largely explains the enormous biological and environmental diversity that it brings together, in addition to its wide range of marine resources and ecosystems. A determining factor that influences marine life is undoubtedly the relief that is submerged in the oceans, since different ecosystems originate in it where diversity of species is concentrated. Likewise, a great diversity of metals and hydrocarbons are concentrated in the relief, which currently constitute another wealth for Mexico. Given this, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI, by its acronym in spanish)) has been given the task of providing data and geographic information of the undersea relief of Mexico through bathymetric cartography to represent the seabed to assist in decision-making in the areas economic, political, social, and technical, as well as for the planning and development of marine infrastructure and, where appropriate, for disaster prevention and response.
