Abstract

This article studies female marginality in Jerez de la Frontera during the first half of the 16th century. To do that, three cases will be analysed. First, Elvira Sánchez’s struggle to prevent her daughter from ending up in a marginal situation after losing her virginity. Second, the liberation of the slave Marcelina and her children by a Convent. Finally, the granting by the Jerez City Council of a license to practice as a surgeon to Catalina Hernández, the first documented woman in Spain practicing this office.
