In the first article of this series we discussed the encounters and divergences between democracy and the communist tradition. In that article, we highlighted the plurality of stakes that were made in the communist camp in relation to democracy, and we can affirm that there was no single stake. In this second article, we will describe the process by which Stalinism and its denial of democracy became hegemonic as the main issue within communist political culture. This normalisation generated concepts of its own that contributed to the normalisation of Stalinism. The article assesses the significance of this rejection of democracy by communist culture and reassesses the importance of today's democratic communist projects.
