Abstract

The Spanish Navy cruiser Reina Regente was one of the most modern and innovative warships of its time, fitted with a cutting-edge design and manoeuvring, autonomy and combat breakthrough theoretical capacities for a ship of its size. However, since it was commissioned into service, doubts on the success of both its design and behaviour at sea in case of heavy weather conditions started to arise. On the morning of March the 10th, 1895, it left Tangier Bay heading to the port of Cadiz. Strait of Gibraltar weather conditions that day had turned into a heavy southwest storm with very high seas. The Reina Regente never made it to port, and disappeared in the middle of the storm along with its 412 sailors. By the time being, shipwreck location remains unknown. The main aim of this study is to develop the means to locate the remains of the Reina Regente. To achieve this, an analysis of documentary sources has been carried out to determine the shipwreck most likely causes. Furthermore, the combination of these results and the implementation of a dispersion physical-mathematical model, allowed determining wreck prospects location based on ship remains found the days and weeks following ship´s lost. Finally, with all these results, a surveying plan is proposed to determine the Reina Regente current location and its final identification.
