Madrid islámico: patrimonio, identidad y derecho a la ciudad.

Abstract

Madrid, como otras capitales europeas, cuenta hoy con una importante presencia de población musulmana, que experimenta una tensión entre su derecho a la ciudad, es decir, a habitarla con todas sus consecuencias materiales y simbólicas, y las lógicas del racismo, la islamofobia y otras formas de discriminación. Al mismo tiempo, y al contrario que otras capitales europeas, Madrid cuenta con un largo y poco conocido legado islámico, imbricado en la historia de la ciudad desde sus orígenes mismos de un modo que desafía los discursos políticos y mediáticos que presentan al islam y a los musulmanes como una presencia reciente, indeseada y esencialmente extraña al cuerpo social. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo presentar un proyecto de investigación, difusión e intervención social articulado en torno al Centro de Estudios sobre el Madrid Islámico (CEMI), que pretende reflexionar sobre las posibilidades y los límites que ofrecen los más de 700 años de legado islámico en la capital española, para realizar, en el presente, prácticas de pedagogía de la diversidad y la alteridad. Dichas prácticas pretenden conectar la recuperación del patrimonio islámico madrileño con las cuestiones que plantea la presencia musulmana en el Madrid del siglo XXI, y, en general, la presencia de sectores de población cuya plena pertenencia al cuerpo social es discutida o negada. El artículo introduce las cuestiones que plantea el legado islámico madrileño en relación con la identidad urbana, describe los principales hitos del mencionado proyecto a lo largo de un lustro (2017-2022), recorre algunas de sus bases teóricas y discute críticamente su alcance y limitaciones.

Madrid, like other European capitals, has today a significant Muslim population, which experiences a tension between its right to the city, that is, its right to inhabit the city with all its material and symbolic consequences, and the logics of racism, Islamophobia and other forms of discrimination to which they are subject. At the same time, and unlike other European capitals, Madrid has a long and little-known Islamic legacy, imbricated in the history of the city from its very origins in a way that defies the political and media narratives that present Islam and Muslims as a recent, unwanted presence, essentially alien to the social body. The aim of this paper is to present a research, dissemination and social intervention project articulated around the Center for the Study of Islamic Madrid (CEMI, in its Spanish initials), which seeks to reflect on the possibilities and limits offered by the more than 700 years of Islamic legacypresent in the Spanish capital, to promote practices of pedagogy of diversity and otherness. These practices aim to connect the recovery of Madrid's Islamic heritage with the questions raised by the presence of Muslims in the 21st century Madrid and, in general, by the presence of those sectors of the population whose full membership of the social body is disputed or denied. The article introduces the issues raised by Madrid's Islamic heritage in relation to urban identity. In doing so, it describes the main milestones of the aforementioned project over a five-year period (2017-2022), reviews some of its theoretical bases and critically discusses its scope and limitations.
