Abstract

Although the implementation of MPAs has been a significantly late measure with respect to the terrestrial environment, its effectiveness in conserving and improving the quality and biodiversity of vulnerable marine spaces is more than evident. Island marine areas, subject to great anthropogenic, extractive, leisure and tourist pressures, require integrated and adequate management plans as a key measure for their ecosystem conservation. The objective of this work is to evaluate the management of 5 tourist and emblematic areas that are protected, these are: Mauritius, Guadeloupe, Azores Islands, Galapagos Islands and Cook Islands. From the main results, it can be concluded that the Galapagos Islands have a good description of the problems, diagnosed through active public participation, and are capable of establishing realistic objectives and policies capable of carrying them out. As a general conclusion, it is determined that tourism must be one of the main axes of the plan throughout the entire process to guarantee its proper functionin
