Abstract

In order to estimate the variations of the microplankton community, as well as the variations in the physicochemical properties of the water throughout a tidal cycle, 5 samplings were carried out in September, November and March in the channel of the San Pedro River (Cádiz). Vertical profiles were taken with a multiparameter probe, and samples were taken for analysis of dissolved nutrients, total suspended solids, CNS, total and fractional chlorophyll, as well as for the phytoplankton community (microplankton, picoplankton and nanoplankton). Temperature presented a daily cycle typical of shallow waters. Dissolved oxygen, pH and chlorophyll fluorescence showed a typical trend, associated with primary production processes. Turbidity, total dissolved solids and CNS were strongly influenced by the tide, obtaining maximum values at low tide and minimum values at high tide. The same was obtained for the salinity and nutrient variables, whose values were higher in the outgoing waters of the channel, indicating that the channel and the surrounding marshes act as a producer system of inorganic nutrients.
