Abstract

Currently, the development of new technologies that can replace conventional sources of energy from fossil fuels is of vital importance to evolve into a sustainable production system based on better management of available resources, as is the case of the Circular Economy. One option is the revaluation of organic waste into raw materials through thermal treatment. Thus, hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL), the object of this work, is a technology that causes a reaction in an aqueous medium at elevated temperatures and pressures below the critical point of water in which biocrude is produced from organic matter. Among the multitude of alternatives to use as organic matter, algal biomass can be obtained in large quantities, either directly from the environment or cultivated in bioreactors and bioremediation stations. Two types of algal biomass are proposed. On the one hand, invasive species of macroalgae, specifically the species Rugulopteryx okamurae, commonly known as Asian algae, present an environmental problem on the coasts of the Mediterranean due to their massive growth that affects native marine life. The other type of algal biomass to be treated is a microalgae-bacteria consortium from the biological treatment of an effluent loaded with nutrients and organic matter generated by a marine aquaculture facility that produces sole. There are several variables that influence HTL. The objective of the research is to determine the influence of the main variables such as temperature, initial biomass load and reaction time, on the yield of obtaining biocrude and its higher heating value (HHV), for both types of algal biomass. All HTL experiments have been carried out on a laboratory scale in a batch reactor with a non-stirred tank, designed to work at high pressures and temperatures with a capacity of 1 L. In each experiment, an initial 200 ml of a mixture of algae with water was prepared. and worked in the absence of oxygen. The extraction of the biocrude obtained was carried out using dichloromethane as an organic solvent. A total of 12 HTL experiments have been carried out, consisting of 2 preliminary experiments plus 8 experiments where the microalgae-bacteria consortium was studied and 2 macroalgae experiments. Based on the preliminary studies, the influence of agitation as a process variable was ruled out, the separation operations procedure was optimized and the solvent used in the extractions, dichloromethane, was selected. In this report, the yield of biocrude obtained and its higher heating value have been compared in the different experiments carried out, in a temperature range between 240-300ºC, in a range of initial biomass load between 5-15% w/w, and in a reaction time range between 20-60 minutes. The best biocrude yield result (18.18%) has been obtained in the microalgae-bacteria consortium at 270ºC, 40 minutes and 5% w/w; while the best HHV result (8871.3 cal/g) has been obtained in the microalgae-bacteria consortium at 300ºC, 40 minutes and 10% w/w. Given that the HTL study of the microalgae-bacteria consortium could be carried out in greater depth, it was decided to carry out the design of a pilot plant scale reactor for said waste. Thus, a reactor has been designed for an annual treatment capacity of 200 kg of dry algal biomass. The HTL pilot plant has a reactor that operates 240 days a year. The process effluent is subjected to vacuum filtration to separate the solid phase from the aqueous liquid phase. The extraction of the biocrude from the solid phase with dichloromethane is carried out in a solid-liquid extractor, while the biocrude from the liquid phase is separated by a liquid-liquid extractor with dichloromethane. Once the extract is separated from the refined, both extracts are subjected to evaporation where the product of interest, the biocrude, is obtained; and the dichloromethane is recovered for subsequent extractions. The conditions selected to carry out the HTL process, and which have therefore determined the design of the reactor are: initial load of 15% algal biomass, 270ºC temperature and 40 minutes of reaction time, reaching pressures of 6 MPa. The designed reactor is cylindrical, has a capacity of 12 L and is composed of austenitic stainless steel (316L), having a thickness of 28 mm. To reach the operating temperature, the reactor is surrounded by an electric furnace and to minimize heat losses to the outside, it is surrounded by a 60 mm thick insulating material (rock wool). Considering the cost of other units in addition to the reactor, a budget for the HTL pilot plant has been estimated at €518,203.33 and will be located at the Soleé Gourmet facilities in the Bay of Cádiz, San Fernando.
