Miradas cruzadas: la construcción de identidades nacionales en La América (Madrid, 1857-1863). Un estudio de caso

Abstract

En el siglo XIX, España y las jóvenes naciones hispanoamericanas atravesaron un complejo escenario político y social en el que se vivió un doble proceso de construcción nacional e identitaria y de redefinición de sus relaciones. La prensa, consolidada como medio de producción de opinión, se convirtió en el foro internacional de diálogo de los diferentes discursos e imágenes nacionales, al mismo tiempo que permitió la creación de extensas redes de participación. En el presente trabajo pretendo aproximarme a este proceso de acercamiento transatlántico y construcción de las identidades nacionales a través de las páginas de la publicación periódica de sesgo liberal, panhispanista y americanista La América. En esta revista se dan cita destacados intelectuales de ambos lados del Atlántico para intercambiar ideas en torno a las relaciones internacionales entre España y las recién nacidas repúblicas hispanoamericanas que fueron objeto de debate en el medio siglo.

In the nineteenth century, Spain and the young Spanish-American nations went through a complex political and social scenario in which there was a dual process of national and identity construction and a redefinition of their relations. The press, consolidated as a means of producing opinion, became the international forum for dialogue of different national discourses and images, at the same time allowing for the creation of extensive networks of participation. In this paper we intend to approach this process of transatlantic rapprochement and the construction of national identities through the pages of the liberal, panhispanist and Americanist periodical La América. This publication brings together leading intellectuals from both sides of the Atlantic to exchange ideas about the international relations between Spain and the newly born Hispanic American Republics that were the subject of debate during the half century.
