«El hombre es el mejor y el peor a un tiempo». Animalismo en las fábulas de Govantes

Abstract

Este trabajo pretende demostrar que ciertas fábulas del siglo XIX ofrecen lecturas valiosas sobre los animales y sobre su relación con el hombre. Con un enfoque que parte de los Animal Studies, nuestras pesquisas se enfocan fundamentalmente en la producción de Ángel Casimiro de Govantes y sobre todos en sus fábulas protagonizadas por el zorro: una especie «dañina» que desde siempre ha merecido una reputación ambivalente. Así pues, destacamos en síntesis tres aspectos de los textos estudiados: primero, el recurso a la Historia Natural como fuente de inspiración para algunos de sus apólogos; segundo, denuncias y muestras de empatía ante el trato violento que han recibido los zorros por parte del hombre; y en tercer lugar, el cuestionamiento de la superioridad moral de la humanidad y la crítica del trato que les dispensa a otros animales.

The aim of this work is to prove that certain spanish fables of the 19th century offer valuable readings on animals and their relationship with men. With an approach that stems from the Animal Studies, our research focuses on the production of Ángel Casimiro de Govantes and especially on his fables featuring the fox: a «harmful» species that has always had an ambivalent reputation. Thus, we highlight in summary three aspects of the studied texts: first, the use of Natural History as a source of inspiration for many of his apologues; secondly, some complaints and signs of empathy in the face of the violent treatment that foxes have received from man; and thirdly, the questioning of the moral superiority of humanity and the criticism of its treatment of other animals
