La cuantificación de la población de las islas Marianas: de la colonización hispana a la leyenda negra antiespañola

Abstract

Las islas Marianas fueron parte del Imperio español desde el siglo XVII hasta el ocaso de la centuria decimonónica. Actualmente sus habitantes, los chamorros, relacionan este periodo con la reducción desorbitada de la población de estas ínsulas. La fuerza de esta idea en su imaginario ha conducido a diversos científicos a cuantificar este decrecimiento (Underwood, Hezel, Shell, Carano, Driver, etc.). Sin embargo, este ejercicio matemático no se puede resolver con exactitud porque las fuentes históricas que constituyen la referencia de estos cálculos presentan una desviación de gran magnitud como consecuencia de su instrumentalización política y los problemas existentes en la delimitación del objeto de estudio.

Mariana Islands were part of the Spanish Empire from the 17th century to the end of the 19th century. Nowadays, their inhabitants, the Chamorros, associate the Hispanic colonization with the exorbitant reduction of the population of the Mariana Islands. The strength of this idea in the collective imagination of this community has led to the effort of certain scientists to quantify it (Hezel, Shell, Carano, Driver, etc.). However, this mathematical exercise cannot be solved exactly because the historical sources (that constitute the reference of these calculations) show a large deviation as a consequence of their political use. On the other hand, anomalies are observed in the delimitation of the object of study.
