Mesenchymal stem cells are a specific type of stem cell, included in the group of multipotent
stem cells. They have numerous advantages, which make them optimal candidates for use in therapy
and treatment of various diseases. Their properties include their ability to differentiate into a wide variety of cell lineages, as well as their immunomodulatory and homeostatic function. In addition, these cells can be obtained from a variety of sources, which makes them very versatile.
Thanks to all these properties, many medical advances based on the application of these cells
have been made, including their use as cellular treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system,
such as osteonecrosis or osteoarthritis. On the other hand, their application in the treatment of
pathologies associated to the nervous system is also being studied, as they have an important function
in neuron regeneration processes, treating diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. One of their most
relevant and well-known applications is the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, thanks to their
differentiation and self-renewal properties, they are ideal for treating cardiomyopathies or
cerebrovascular accidents. In recent years, they have also been tested as an alternative to reverse cellular ageing processes; this application is of great relevance as it could help to prevent the deterioration of
certain parts of the organism and bring them back to their maximum functioning.
Mesenchymal stem cells, therefore, are of great relevance in different medical fields and it is
necessary that research with them continues in order to see all the different applications they can have
and to get the maximum possible potential out of them. In the current study, different aspects associated to mesenchymal stem cells have been addressed, from their characteristics and mechanisms of action, to their current applications as cell therapy in regenerative medicine.
