Abstract

It is presented how health problems can appear due to alcohol consumption, from a global perspective with the ecological model or natural history. This model involves three basic elements, the person, the substance consumed and the environment, each with a series of associated factors or risk factors. The balance between these elements constitutes the integrated consumption, the rupture of which gives rise to the next stage of problems associated with consumption and finally, in the third stage, these are already established, constituting the stage of alcohol dependence. Various instruments for early detection and associated actions are described so that health professionals can intervene to minimize the problems of the people they serve and, if necessary, establish the appropriate preventive measures at each stage.
