Abstract

Cadiz is the only Phoenician colony, with Carthage, for which foundation legends can be found in classical sources. Those legends give special importance to the religious element, insisting in themes like the oracular command and the relocation of sacred objects from the metropolis, which, in our opinion,must be understood in the light of a polemical context in which the use of elements belonging in the classical tradition should not make us blind to the possibility of the presence of localistic or pro-Carthaginian attitudes.
