Abstract

The ability of CeO2 to undergo reduction confers great applicability in the synthesis of catalytic supports for environmentally relevant reactions. However, its scarcity has demanded the development of formulations that minimize its content. Since catalysis is a surface phenomenon, the most successful strategy employed is to support it on another more abundant type of element. In this thesis, this concept has been taken to the point of achieving maximum surface dispersion, obtaining catalysts based on isolated cerium atoms with increased redox properties. Meanwhile, a new field of applications for cerium-based supported systems has been explored: photocatalysis, which finds applications as relevant as green hydrogen generation from reactions such as water splitting or the dehydrogenation of certain compounds such as formic acid. In order to characterize the synthesized systems at an atomic level, some of the most advanced techniques in transmission electron microscopy have been used, in combination with simulations and DFT calculations, allowing relationships to be found between nanostructures, their chemical composition, and their properties. In this way, the studies contained in this doctoral thesis will be specifically aimed at the investigation of the nanostructure and redox properties of the CeO2/YSZ and CeO2/SrTiO3 systems, and at the study of the photocatalytic properties of systems based on CeO2/TiO2
