Abstract

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite, launched in December 2022, is part of a mission to improve the understanding of the oceans and continental surface waters using high-resolution altimetric data. The following study validates geostrophic currents derived from the sea surface height anomaly provided by SWOT using hourly high frequency (HF) radar data from Puertos del Estado network. Three SWOT orbital passes over the western sub-basin of the gulf of Cádiz are analysed, each associated with an atmospheric regime of the region: Levante, Poniente and calm; using the HF radar measurements closest in time to them. The altimetric data are filtered with a Loess method to reduce noise, and the HF radar data with an hourly average. Since the open ocean surface circulation is mainly geostrophic, equivalence between the geostrophic (SWOT) and total (HF radar) currents can be assumed for comparison. Both are plotted on coincident spatial grids, using the nearest neighbour based on the euclidean distance, and the accuracy is assessed with the RMSE. The best fit is obtained for the calm event (RMSEmodule = 4,5 cm/s), and higher values for Levante (RMSEmodule = 10,1 cm/s) and Poniente (RMSEmodule = 10,9 cm/s). Although there are still few validations of the SWOT satellite, the results obtained in this study are consistent with those of other instruments previously validated in the same area, which reinforces the methodology used and the results. Although some differences have been observed between SWOT and HF radar measurements, the results confirm its ability to provide high quality data. Nonetheless, these findings underscore the need for further research across diverse oceanic regions and conditions to fully harness SWOT's capabilities, thereby expanding its role in oceanographic studies.
