El aprendizaje artesanal en Salamanca: un estudio desde el Colegio de Carvajal en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII

Abstract

El aprendizaje artesanal cuenta en la actualidad con la atención de la investigación. La producción preindustrial necesitaba de aprendices para perpetuar el oficio artesano. Son numerosos los casos ibéricos que se han analizado ya, sin embargo, Salamanca aún no cuenta con un estudio pormenorizado de los artesanos y sus aprendices. En este trabajo se analiza el aprendizaje artesanal en Salamanca en la primera mitad del siglo xviii, desde la perspectiva del Colegio de Huérfanos de san Antonio o de Carvajal que condicionó la entrada de aprendices ajenos a las familias artesanas en el mundo manufacturero. Esta institución ha pasado desapercibida para muchos investigadores y sin embargo, resulta altamente interesante para conocer la infancia y la juventud en una de las ciudades castellanas más importantes del Antiguo Régimen.

The craft apprenticeship system currently attracts research attention. Preindustrial production relied on apprentices to perpetuate the artisanal trade. Numerous Iberian cases have already been analyzed; however, Salamanca lacks a detailed study of artisans and their apprentices. This work examines craft apprenticeship in Salamanca in the first half of the 18th century, focusing on the perspective of the Orphans’ College of San Antonio or Carvajal, which influenced the entry of apprentices from non-artisan families into the manufacturing world. This institution has gone unnoticed by many researchers, yet it proves highly interesting for understanding childhood and youth in one of the most significant Castilian cities of the Ancien Regime.
