Abstract

The present article recounts the locating in Madrid’s Diocesan Historical Archive of a previously undiscovered text by Cayetana de la Cerda y Vera, Countess of Lalaing, that contains her reply to the censorship of her translation of Les Américaines, ou la Preuve de la religion chrétienne par les lumières naturelles, a work by Madame Leprince de Beaumont. The text, presented to the Government’s Council of Castile in 1791, and absent from the case documents in the National Historical Archive, constitutes a key element which enables one to reconstruct, alongside other censorship materials handled by the Ecclesiastical Vicariate of Madrid, the extensive censorship process to which Lalaing’s work was subjected between 1782 and 1804. The reply, transcribed and analysed in the present article, reveals the vigorous tone and argumentative force used by the translator to counter the censors, as she vindicates the intellectual capacity of women to write on and debate questions of religion.
