Abstract

The onset of scientific renewal in Spain occurred between the late 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. In terms of medical-surgical training, the most significant development was the establishment of the Royal College of Surgery of the Navy (1748) in Cádiz. This institution played a pivotal role in advancing healthcare knowledge in 18th-century Spain and was instrumental in the unprecedented integration of medical and surgical education in Europe. Furthermore, the contemplation of the value of human life gave rise to the concept of “resuscitation” as a medical intervention aimed at saving dying individuals. The theoretical foundation for this concept was established in the 18th century, during which specific treatment protocols were initiated for certain accident victims, particularly focusing on the preservation of life in cases of drowning, which can be considered the paradigm of such tragedies. Through a historical-medical analysis, this work investigates the role played by the Spanish Navy during the “Ilustración” in the treatment provided to drowning victims, marking the origins of resuscitation practices in Spain.
