Abstract

Since 1748, when the military surgeon Pedro Virgili created the Royal College of Surgery of the Navy in Cadiz, spanish hospitals began to have a multitude of dispensaries. These dispensaries contained everything: from simple medicines to balms and ointments to treat a good number of conditions, including the main treatments to improve the most common skin lesions. Thus, the official spanish pharmacopoeia introduced wine as an essential element among the most prescribed instruments and remedies for health care. In addition, a biocultural transfer took place in all biogeographic regions, which determined not only the official inventories, but also a popular use of this medicine and, especially, of sherry wine in domestic medicine. In this sense, the contributions made by the Navy in the 19th century stand out as an example of therapeutic innovation in the treatment of skin lesions and, therefore, in the field of dermatology
