The Malaspina Expedition (1789-1794) was the greatest expeditionary adventure of the Spanish Crown during the Enlightenment. The health care of the navigators was in the hands of two surgeons from the Royal College of Cádiz: Francisco de
Flores Moreno, assigned to the Descubierta, and Pedro María González Gutiérrez, assigned to the Atrevida. This article analyzes the health situation and the work of the
surgeons during the expedition was developed. We also consider the connection that
both surgeons maintained with the Royal College of Navy Surgery and the city of Cádiz.
