Abstract

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Ferdinand VII resolved to address the extensive dossier initiated by Charles III regarding the regulation of spas. Consequently, he proceeded to issue a series of royal decrees in 1816, which resulted in the establishment of the “Cuerpo de Médicos-Directores de Baños” (medical doctor of the spa). In this context, we examine the profile of Juan José Cortinas, a former student of the Faculty of Medicine of Cadiz. The account of his life and work demonstrates not only his value as a doctor and scientist in the field of hydrology but also his contributions to civil society. Furthermore, the character allows us to provide a brief overview of thermalism in Cadiz and the legacy of the Cadiz Medical-Surgical School in this medical specialty.
