This article is part of a research that analyzes the Malvinas and Gibraltar disputes as paradigmatic cases of prolonged territorial disputes in order to assess whether their durability is influenced by a process of territorial entrenchment, which has affected the possibility of conflict resolution. In the following pages we will analyze the functional dimension of the entrenchment of the Malvinas and Gibraltar, postulating that indeed in both case studies the increase in the tangibility of the limits of the disputed territory has been a source of controversy and disagreement, contributing to the durability of the conflict. Two indicators are identified for the tangibility of boundaries in disputed territories: the demarcation of borders and the existence of material barriers at those borders. Demarcation encompasses the preparation of official maps that integrate the disputed area and the jurisdictions that derive from them, which has become an inexhaustible source of confrontations in the history of both conflicts. At the same time, the existence of material barriers such as customs or border crossings has also had a negative impact, since it materializes the boundaries with an immediate concrete impact that has contributed to exacerbating the conflict over territory.
