It cannot be claimed that Muslim philosophers, scientists, and Sufis established the science of aesthetic,
possessed a theory of aesthetic, or authored specialized books in this field. However, it can be said that they
possessed aesthetic concepts and scattered insights within their various works.
Among those who held clear views and concepts on beauty, its values, and meanings is Abū Ḥāmid al-Ġazālī
(450-505 AH). His understanding of beauty stemmed from ethics and Sufism. In his book Iḥyāˀ ˁUlūm al-Dīn
(The Revival of the Religious Sciences), he aimed to revive and instill ethics in society and to cultivate an
appreciation for what is beautiful. In his book al-Maqṣad al-Asnà fī Šarḥ Asmāˀ Allāh al-Ḥusnà (The Sublimest
Aim in Explaining God’s Most Beautiful Names), he sought to elevate the human spirit, consciousness, taste, and
sensibility, and to bring humanity closer to God. This is also what he strived for in most of his writings,
disseminating meanings and values here and there from which aesthetic concepts can be derived.
His starting point for these concepts was absolute truth, absolute beauty, and absolute goodness. His point of
departure was the Divine Essence, and his ultimate goal was humanity, striving for its elevation and ascent towards
the most sublime and beautiful.
This research seeks to examine these aesthetic views, meanings, and concepts in the thought of Al-Ghazali.
