Negociando el exilio. Una carta árabe inédita de Boabdil previa a su partida (1493)

Abstract

El artículo(1) analiza, edita y traduce una carta árabe del 1493 que dirige el último emir nazarí, Muḥammad XI (Boabdil), a los Reyes Católicos desde Andarax, en la que negociaba su salida de la Península Ibérica. El objetivo del documento era informar a los monarcas de la autoridad otorgada a Abū l-Qāsim al-Mulīh para actuar como su representante ante ellos y solicitar la confirmación del acuerdo relativo a su salida que se había negociado previamente en Granada. El trabajo ofrece el contexto histórico y cancilleresco de la negociación de las capitulaciones de 1493, el análisis de la misiva desde la perspectiva de la literatura epistolar de carácter oficial y un estudio de los aspectos lingüísticos del texto. Se ha realizado la edición, traducción y estudio del documento en el contexto de las misivas oficiales nazaríes, en particular las identificadas con Boabdil. Entre los resultados, cabe destacar la originalidad del documento porque permite atisbar la propia voz de Boabdil en las negociaciones para su partida; el contenido incluye fórmulas oficiales del poder, sin el autógrafo oficial (ˁalāma) del emir porque ya no es soberano nazarí, pero tampoco aparece el autógrafo personal reducido a su nombre; el texto contiene dialectalismos andalusíes, a pesar de la refinada escritura cancilleresca del escribano. A modo de conclusión, Boabdil contó con la fidelidad de secretarios que habían ejercido sus funciones durante el período nazarí; en cuanto al formato de la carta de Boabdil, el contenido se inserta en las fórmulas propias de la oficialidad de finales del siglo XV.

The article analyzes, edits, and translates an Arabic letter from 1493 sent by the last Nasrid emir, Muḥammad XI (Boabdil), to the Catholic Monarchs from Andarax, in which he negotiated his departure from the Iberian Peninsula. The document’s purpose was to inform the monarchs of the authority granted to Abū l-Qāsim al-Mulīh to act as his representative before them and to seek confirmation of the agreement regarding his departure that had been previously negotiated in Granada. The study provides the historical and chancery context of the 1493 capitulations, an analysis of the letter within the framework of official epistolary literature, and a linguistic examination of the text. The edition, translation, and commentary are carried out with reference to official Nasrid letters, particularly those associated with Boabdil. The document proves especially valuable for its originality, as it offers a rare glimpse of Boabdil’s own voice in the negotiations over his exile. Its content preserves official formulas of authority, yet without the emir’s formal autograph (ˁalāma), since he was no longer sovereign, nor even the reduced personal autograph limited to his name. The text also displays Andalusi dialectal features, despite the refined chancery style of the scribe, reflecting Boabdil’s reliance on secretaries who had served during the Nasrid period. At the same time, it incorporates formulas typical of late fifteenth-century official correspondence.
