On the clear morning of April 3, 1800, three frigates of the Royal Navy
set sail from the port of Cádiz bound for Lima, escorting thirteen merchant ships on
their journey. On board the frigate Nuestra Señora del Carmen, a young surgeon
in the Royal Navy was unaware that this voyage would forever mark his life story.
In this article, we discuss the life and work of Joaquín Granados Navarro (1774-1838),
a physician and surgeon in the Spanish Royal Navy, and his close ties to Cádiz and
the Royal College of Surgery in that city.
